Chiefs Sign Shaun Smith

I received information last night confirming the signing of NT Shaun Smith, but based on the source, I figured I would play it safe and wait. Apparently Shaun Smith himself says that he is a Chief now (via twitter.)

I will have more on this story tonight.

Chiefs Sign Thomas Jones

Brandon Spano
March 9, 2010

The Speculation is over. Thomas Jones has signed a 2 year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs worth 5 million dollars. Adam Schefter broke the news and has also reported that the Chiefs have officially cancelled their meeting with Willie Parker.

This is very big people. The Chiefs have instantly became a dominant rushing team. This is an absolute nightmare for defenses. When Jamaal Charles has the defense chasing him all around the field in exhaustion, Thomas Jones will come in and hit them right in the mouth. The Chiefs are one solid wide receiver and two good lineman away from being a serious force on offense.

Welcome to Kansas City Thomas Jones!

Chambers Still A Chief

Brandon Spano
March 8, 2010

As you probably already know by now, Chris Chambers has re-signed with the Chiefs for 3 more years. Adam Schefter says the contract is worth 15 million and Michael Lombardi says it’s worth 12. Either way, the top receiver from 2009 is coming back.

If you are a Chiefs fan, you have to be excited. Not because they re-signed the slightly above average Chris Chambers, but because Chris Chambers actually decided to come back. We are not even a week into free agency. Chambers could have found a suitor within the next few months. One that has an offense that he likes. Maybe one that has a good chance to contend for a title and probably one that is close to his family.

Instead, Chambers came back to a 4-12 ball club in the middle of a rebuilding project.

Veterans want to win Championships. Especially when they have never won one. Chris Chambers coming back to KC shows that he believes that this team is headed in the right direction. Based on the 3 year deal, It’s not a stretch to say that he wants to finish his career as a Kansas City Chief. If he continues to play like he did last year and he continues to display the professionalism that he has shown, I have no problem with him retiring in the Red and Gold.

If you add Mike Vrabel to this list, you have 2 veterans that want to be apart of this program now. That’s saying something special. Hopefully other players around the league notice this and stop by for a visit.

Welcome back Chris.

Funny LJ Dis

When Gregg Rosenthal from Pro Football Talk rated the top ten running backs in free agency, this is how he described Larry Johnson:

7. Larry Johnson: The diapers are off.  In running back years, he’s not far from Depends.

You gotta love that Chiefs fans!

A Different View On Free Agency – Krayfish Sounds Off

Brandon Spano
March 7, 2010

On Saturday night I wrote an article called: “Be Patient Chiefs Fans.” I thought it was pretty good. I had Colleen edit and publish it and hit the couch for some relaxing time. I fell asleep watching tape of a linebacker from Coastal Carolina. When I woke up on Sunday morning, I checked my facebook page and people were giving me thumbs up, the story had 5 stars on chiefscrowd.com and I had 2 emails from people saying that I need to keep pumping positivity into the Chiefs blogosphere. I was feeling pretty good.

Then, before I left the house, I figured I would check the chiefsinformer to see if anybody had commented and how many people had read the article. what I found was Krayfish dropping about 1000 words on me! Dude got ill on the keyboard. There was one quote that really caught my attention:

“When you can’t even win a playoff game in the span it takes for a child to become a full grown adult, there is something wrong with your way of doing business.”

So without further ado, here is……Krayfish Sounding Off (slightly edited)

Justin Fargas To Visit Chiefs

Brandon Spano
March 7, 2010

Ex Raider running back Justin Fargas is scheduled to visit Kansas City about the available backup running back position.

First of all, DO NOT sleep on this guy Chiefs fans. Justin Fargas is one of the most violent runners in all of football. The guy is an absolute battering ram. If you need two, he’ll get ya three, if you need five, he’ll get ya six. “The Human Crash Dummy” is the nickname given to him by his former running backs coach Tom Rathman. Rathman even said in 2007 that Justin Fargas changed his entire mentality about running backs and that Fargas makes him wish he could go back in time with the same no fear mentality that Fargas has.

I have always admired the way he ran (not the team he played for) and wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Chiefs uniform. If it comes down to Thomas Jones or Justin Fargas, I obviously would have to go with Thomas Jones, but that does not mean that Fargas is bad by any means.

The Raiders are reporting that Justin Fargas failed his physical and thats why they released him.

Ladies and Gentlemen that is exactly why the Raiders are the Raiders. You have to be sick to your stomach when you leave a franchise like that. I could go on all day about the disgusting nature in which they try to conduct business but I won’t waste either of our time.

The real story is that Justin Fargas is due 1.7 million in a few days and the Raiders don’t want to pay up. “I was told by the coach that they were moving in a different direction,” Fargas said. “They said it was strictly about money. … I know some things were put out there, I guess they said I didn’t pass a physical? I’m a little disappointed by the way it happened but I understand it’s a business.”

It was probably pretty hard to swallow his pride and keep it cool on that one, but Fargas managed.

We should know by Monday night how the Thomas Jones meeting went. If he leaves without a deal, look for Fargas to get a shot.

Be Patient Chiefs Fans

In an unbelievably, ridiculous stream of events, the Chiefs didn’t sign Julius Peppers or Chester Taylor! They didn’t even try for Antrel Rolle or Karlos Dansby and failed in negotiations for Anquan Boldin! Pioli couldn’t even pull in Nate Burleson for god sakes! This off season is already a failure!

Chances are that somebody you know has spoken words very similar to this and it’s OK. As we all know by now, unrealistic expectations and knee jerk reactions are not only a god given right, but a way of living for most Americans. Two days after free agency begins, these people would like to feel something and in 2010, no news is BAD news.

If you are one of these people, please don’t be offended. I am just stating my opinion, just like you have stated yours. My belief is that if you actually look at the facts, you might feel a little better about the situation.

Terrance Copper Is Coming Back For More

Brandon Spano
March 6, 2010

Terrance Copper was one of the Chiefs unrestricted free agents that hit the market on Friday. He didn’t go far. Copper has re-signed with the Chiefs. Out of the 3 wide receivers that were eligible for free agency, Terrance Copper is the only one that the the Chiefs have re-signed.

This isn’t too much of a surprise considering that the Copper was a valuable piece to the Chiefs special teams units last year. Haley values smart players who work hard and Copper fits that example.

Every franchise needs depth and guys that are willing to play special teams and most Championship teams have 4 or 5 Terrance Coppers on their squad. I don’t mind this pickup at all.

Thomas Jones to Vist Kansas City On Monday

“More veteran RB news to go along with Willie Parker and Justin Fargas: Chiefs scheduled former Jets RB Thomas Jones to visit KC on Monday.”

Adam Schefter’s Twitter Page

This is big news for the Chiefs. This could instantly give the Chiefs one of the most dominant running games in the league. Hopefully Jones will leave with a deal.

Chiefs Interested In Burleson, Lions Snatched Him

Brandon Spano
March 5, 2010

The Chiefs were interested in wide receiver Nate Burleson, which is pretty obvious when you look at the Chiefs wide receiver situation.

Unfortunately, the Lions just signed Burleson, 2 hours after the free agency period started. The Chiefs will have to look elsewhere for help at WR.

Chiefs Tenders, Signings, And Cuts

Brandon Spano
March 4, 2010

The Chiefs placed tenders on 6 unrestricted free agent players today and we will look into each one of them separately. Like most moves made by the Chiefs, we are forced to read between the lines and in some of these cases, the lines are pretty clear. We will also go over players that will not be on the squad next year.

2010 Free Agent Tracker!

Brandon Spano
March 4, 2010

As you know, there are hundreds of free agents available and keeping up with who’s available and who’s not is tough. So we have set up the free agent tracker for you on the right side of the home page.

All you have to do is click on it and it will send you to NFL.com’s free agent list where you can search the field by name, position, or team. On the columns to the right of the player’s name it will list his 2009 team and his new 2010 team. Available / unsigned players are marked TBD (to be determined)

Remember UFA means that the player is unrestricted and that he is open game to anybody, where as RFA means that the player is restricted and that compensation will have to be given to his team to acquire him.

Go ahead and have a look, you will be surprised by how many solid players are available.

Haley Is Setting An Example – Goodbye Wide Receivers!

Brandon Spano
March 4, 2010

The Chiefs came into this off season knowing that they had three wide receivers that would be unrestricted free agents if they were not signed by 11:00pm on March 4th. Those wide receivers are Chris Chambers, Bobby Wade, and Terrence Copper.

Well, It’s March 4th and 11:00 pm is hours away. None of them are signed.

As a matter of fact, the Chiefs released Devard Darling too.  Unless the Chiefs sign one of these wide receivers today, that’s four wide receivers off of the team. Four.

Lets back track a little bit. The Chiefs end up almost setting the NFL record for most drops in a season, the franchise QB gets a ton of criticism because of it, and the front office is questioned for releasing the greatest catching tight end of all time after this groups performance.  To make matters worse, the head coach was formally known as one of the top WR coaches in the league…….. Ray Charles could see this one coming.

The axe has fallen and more than two birds were killed with one stone.

Todd Haley is showing his team that this is not okay and that the Chiefs will not be working on this next year. Practice running routes, sure. Timing, yes. blocking, of coarse. But catching? Nope. At least not in the fashion that they were last year, when they had to make receivers spend hours after practice catching footballs. This is the NFL and these guys are receivers, which mean that they should be able to receive. Spending some extra time on the jugs machine is one thing, but trying to teach professional football players how to catch is just counter productive and spending way too much time on something that each one of them should already be able to do with ease.

I like this move and I like the notion that this sends to the other wide receivers that are or will be on the roster. Dwayne Bowe is probably thinking, “Damn, he got rid everybody!” That’s right Dwayne, he sure did, now it’s time to step it up or you know what’s coming.

The next step is to sign wide receivers. Considering that the Chiefs now have four or more holes to fill, you can definitely expect them to find some through free agency and possibly draft one in April. Whether or not the Chiefs pick up a big name is anybody’s guess, but the fact that we have this many holes, leads to the obvious notion that we are in the game for some receivers.

The nest few days should be exciting.

Pioli’s Small Town Connection

Don’t ask me how, but I found another gem in a pile of shrubs. I ran into this great article about Scott Pioli and his buddy, Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder. This was an article written by Tom Robinson for the Virginia Pilot…… I don’t know either.

“This is a typical Scott Pioli project,” Wilder said of the Chiefs. “They’re going to be built to be a consistent winner. He’s not going to go with people who can’t pass the character test. He’s going to be smart with his money. And he’s going to be smart with his younger players, as far the older players he mixes in.”

O’Brien Schofield Comes Up Again

Brandon Spano
March 2, 2010

A few weeks ago one of our readers, Marinerunner13, posted a question for me about Wisconsin’s under rated defensive end, O’brien Schofield. Considering that O’Brien Schofield was one of my highest rated defensive players in college and had been over looked by many “experts” in the national media, I felt the need to tell MarineRunner and everybody else what I thought of him.

Just to play catch up, O’Brien Schofield was a possessed beast at Wisconsin who racked up 12 sacks last year as a defensive end in their 4-3 defense. At 6′2, 225 pounds, he came in as a guy who needed the Senior Bowl and NFL combine to show that he had what it takes to play the linebacker position in the NFL. He started his off season by playing linebacker in the East West Shrine Game and winning the MVP award while playing a position that he had never played before.

Everything was going great for the NFL hopeful who was looked at as a 3rd or 4th round pick at OLB in a 3-4 defense. After his dominance in the East West Shrine Game, he was a few good showings away from increasing his stock significantly. The Senior Bowl and NFL combine, were the stages that those showings needed to be on.

Schofield made the trip to Mobile, Alabama with momentum on his side and just as he began to acclimate himself to his new environment he tore his ACL on the first day. Now, with a year of rehabilitation in front of him, all he can do is interview at the NFL combine. For some players that would be a major problem, but for a sincerely good guy like Schofield, he won’t let that slow him down much.

As I was sifting through Kcchiefs.com, I found an interview that Schofield did with the outstanding Josh Looney and felt like it was a good thing to post here. If you haven’t read it already, here it is: Kcchiefs.com Schofield Interview
